Sumu and Usva, a pair of quite carefree twins, lead their peaceful lives in the midst of a grand, evergreen forest which goes on and on beyond the horizon. Brought up in the middle of the woods, lakes, and meadows they live every day in the same manner as the other. Days pass by as Sumu worries about his fragile sister; but one day his health begins to turn against him. And as if things could not get any worse one day he wakes up to find Usva nowhere to be found. The only thing left behind is the amethyst pendant she has always carried with her.
Making the decision to go look for her Sumu leaves the shelter of the forest which has always looked after the siblings. He finds the forest does not go as far as they have imagined - instead, a thin glass wall separates his home from a large, frozen city of metal and ice climbing towards the clouds which block the sun and the stars. Determined to find his sister Sumu plunges into the unknown, brand new world meeting the strangest people, some whom he has never met but who seem to know him, and some who he could swear he knows but who have never heard of him before. Forging on he must face not only the challenges the city of 3412 Kafka poses but also his own deepest fears of gain and loss.
